Sealing Solutions for PEM, AEM and Alkaline Systems

Sealing Solutions for Electrolysis Technology

PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane), AEM (Anion Exchange Membrane) and Alkaline Systems are the three primary production technologies for water electrolysis, all sharing the core function of splitting water into Hydrogen and Oxygen. There are, however, distinctions between the three:

PEM

  • Speed & purity
  • High efficiency
  • High costs
  • Compact (smallest footprint due to high current density)

AEM

  • Hybrid of PEM & Alkaline – combines low cost of Alkaline with compactness of PEM
  • Non-precious materials, operates under alkaline conditions
  • Technology is still emerging. Still in developmental stage with work ongoing to improve stability and long-term durability

Alkaline

  • Old & reliable. The most mature and commercially proven technology
  • Low cost. Uses cheap, non-precious metal
  • Slow and large
  • Caustic

Sealing solutions are crucial to guaranteeing a long life and high-volume production of PEM, AEM, and Alkaline electrolysis. To ensure durability in harsh, corrosive environment, specialised materials are developed and tested rigorously to accurately predict their life span. This effort includes maintaining extremely high cleanliness to prevent performance-damaging impurities and ions. For high-volume production, the move to automated manufacturing relies on using smart sealing designs that simplify and allow for easy, smooth handling. Finally, reliable performance depends on precision-moulded gaskets supported by simulation that ensure pressure is applied uniformly across the entire cell.

Product Range

Precision Moulded Elastomer Seals – Specially formulated to maintain integrity and sealing capabilities in harsh chemical conditions.

Extruded Elastomer Seals – Optimised for low hydrogen permeability, ensuring longevity and maintaining homogenous pressure distribution.

Seals on Metal Frame – Serve as spacers, contain electrochemical cell components and maintain operational reliability under high-pressure.

Seals on Bipolar Plate – Ensure electrical connection and gas separation between anode and cathode compartments.

Plug & Seal for secure sealing of air and fluid passage – Provide a safe and leak-free connection between housings. Secure and easy to assemble – ideal for transport of air, water and oils.
