Lithium Battery Seals

Lithium Battery Seals – A Complete Sealing Solution

For over 50 years M Barnwell Services has supplied Lithium Battery Seals to the worlds leading manufacturers. As demand for Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Renewable Energy increases, the Lithium Battery seals used in battery packs must be engineered to withstand immense pressures, extreme temperature shifts and aggressive chemical exposure whilst maintaining a robust barrier. The integrity of these components directly impact a battery’s longevity and prevents catastrophic failure such as thermal runaway (fire).

Lithium-ion Batteries are the dominant rechargeable battery technology globally. This is largely due to their high energy density, lightweight design and long lifespan.

Their usage covers three major categories:

Transport and Electric Mobility

The largest user of lithium batteries and the primary force driving global demand and technological innovation

  • Electric Vehicles (EVs) including all-electric cars, trucks and buses. Batteries in these applications provide the necessary range, acceleration power and energy efficiency
  • Electric Light Vehicles including e-Bikes, e-Scooters, Electric Motorcycles and other Mobility devices
  • Industrial and Specialised Transportation such as Electric Forklifts, Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and Marine Applications such as Electric Ferries and Yachts

Consumer Electronics

  • Mobile Devices, Smartphones, Laptops and Tablets
  • Wearable Technology – Smartwatches, Fitness Trackers and Wireless Earbuds
  • Cordless Tools such as Power Tools and Household Devices

Backup Energy Storage

  • Grid Energy Storage Systems (ESS) – Large-scale battery farms used by utility companies to store excess energy generated by solar/wind
  • Residential and Commercial storage
  • Telecomms

Products

  • DIAvent® Seals – engineered for EV’s and HEV’s with a variety of specifications including:
    • DIAvent® Mini
    • DIAvent® Light
    • DIAvent® Highflow
  • Elastomeric Gaskets – Made from materials such as EPDM, VMQ, FKM/Viton, they are crucial for sealing the main battery housing/lid and allowing for manufacturing tolerances, thermal expansion and mechanical vibration. They must be resistant to high heat, flame and environmental factors such as UV.
  • Adhesive Sealants – Depending on the specific application, adhesives are available in Epoxy, Polyurethane (PU), Silicone and Acrylic. Their purpose is not just to bond the components, but to manage heat, protect against environmental damage and provide structural integrity.
  • O-Rings – Similar to to Gaskets, O-Rings are used to create a barrier against moisture and impurities. They are placed between the casing components and provide flexible sealing.
  • Compression Seals – Seals such as static seals (Gaskets and O-Rings) and Gland Packing Seals rely on pressure exerted by the component when assembled to create the seal. The sealing material is squeezed between the casing components. This action creates a continuous, high-contact seal that prevents escape of contaminants.

The choice of sealing method is determined by the battery’s type, application, and safety standards. Proper sealing is a vital step in manufacturing, as it directly prevents leakage, contamination, and thermal runaway. Failure in this process can result in safety hazards and a reduction in performance. Therefore, battery manufacturers strictly follow quality control and safety protocols to guarantee both reliable sealing and overall battery safety.
