What is a Lantern Ring?

A Lantern Ring is a perforated hollow ring located near the centre of the stuffing box of a pump, playing a vital role on the successful operation of pump systems. It protects the stuffing box by allowing flush water or pressure to enter, also keeping any contaminants out. Lantern rings are also an outlet for cooling. They provide an opening that assists cooling in the stuffing box, preventing the system from being completely closed off. Another primary function of the lantern ring is to ease lubrication. The fluid entering the lantern ring lubricates the packing. This reduces friction against the shaft. Additionally, lubrication helps decrease deterioration of the machine parts and the amount of excess heat generated within the system.

Key features and benefits of Lantern Rings:

  • Costs up to 50% less than OE-supplied lantern rings
  • Effortlessly cuts with knife or saw
  • Short lengths splice together, removing waste
  • Seamless installation and removal from stuffing box – reducing costly downtime
