Railcar Manway Gasket
"The pure PTFE construction and rigid centre layer can offer substantially more crush resistance"
A Pulp and Paper customer was having leakage and service life issues with their Nitrile (NBR) rubber nozzle style gaskets.
During plant level loading and unloading of the tank cars, it became obvious that the elastromeric gasket was the root of the cause and was not sealing properly. The gasket was being deformed during installation and splitting due to the demands of the narrow seating area of the nozzle and the impact of the heavy manway lid.
To eliminate the chances of splitting during installation, we recommended switching to 3545 TUFFRAIL® manway lid style gasket versus the nozzle style configuration. TUFF-RAIL® 3545 fits firmly into the groove of the lid, ensuring the gasket holds its position during installation and the opening and closing of the manway. Knowing that the incumbent elastomeric gasket was being crushed by the narrow seating area of the nozzle, we also eliminated those concerns by recommending our TUFFRAIL® 3545 due to its pure PTFE construction and rigid centre layer. TUFF-RAIL ® 3504 can offer substantially more crush resistance.
The leakage issue solved and service life greatly increased saving time and money
