3.1 Material Certification on Manufactured Seals

Overview

A 3.1 Material Certificate is a document provided by the manufacturer to show specific inspection results and ensure products meet a required standard. Certificates are often required in industries where material strength, reliability and endurance are of high importance, such as Aerospace & DefenceOffshore Drilling, Automotive and Construction.

For O-rings and seals, a 3.1 certificate serves to provide assurance that the products meet specified material and quality standards as outlined by the EN 10204 3.1. In this context, the certificate typically covers the following:
    • Material type, sometimes including batch number for traceability
    • Composition – documenting the exact formulation of the elastomer or polymer used in the O-ring or seal, confirming it meets required standards. This is essential for applications needing specific chemical and physical properties to perform under conditions like high temperatures, exposure to chemicals, or varying pressures.
    • Performance – hardness (Shore A), tensile strength, elongation, and compression set, which ensure that the seals or O-rings will function correctly.
    • Verification from the manufacturer that the batch has been inspected, tested, and conforms to the requested specifications.
