ISO 10423 (API 6A)

ISO 10423 (API 6A) – International Standard for Petroleum and Natural Gas Industries

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a global federation of national standard bodies. International Standards are set by ISO technical committees that concentrate on and express a specific area of profession.

API (American Petroleum Institute) is a trade association that presents all angles of America’s oil and natural gas industry. The API affirms over 500 standards and advised operating techniques.

The present API 6A specification is a reformed acceptance of the English version of ISO 10423:2003. ISO 10423 was set by Technical Committee ISO/TC 67. Equipment, materials and offshore systems for petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries, drilling and manufacture equipment was based on the previous API Specification 6A.

ISO 10423/API 6A Appendix F.1.13.5.2 Sour Fluid: Petroleum and Natural Gas industries – Drilling and production equipment – Wellhead and Christmas Tree equipment immersion testing – standard test fluids for non-metallic seals. Absorption procedure offers a standardized technique to assess polymer elements for use in fluids and gases characteristic of the considered installation media. The test factors that can be chosen are the mixture of the gas/fluid aspect and the test temperature. The test media is decided by the adequate API 6A Material Class (below). The temperature matches the API 6A Temperature Class.

Material Class DD/EE – Gas phase mixture: 10% H2S + 5% CO2 + 85% CH4

Material Class FF/HH – Gas phase mixture: 10% H2S + 80% CO2 + 10% CH4

Purpose of ISO 10423

Purpose of ISO 10423 is to identify demands and to provide suggestions for the design, materials, welding, dimensional and functional interchangeability, testing, marking, inspection, storing, handling, purchasing, shipment, remanufacture and repair of wellhead and ‘christmas tree’ equipment for use in the natural gas and petroleum industries. However, it does not concern field use, field testing, field repair of wellhead and ‘christmas tree’ equipment.

ISO 10423 (API 6A)

ISO 10423 is suitable to the particular equipment listed below:

  • Wellhead equipment – tubing-head spools, cross-over spools, casing-head spools, casing-head housings, tubing-head spools, multi-stage head spools and also housings
  • Tubing and casing – slip hangers and mandrel hangers
  • Loose connectors – bling connectors, bull plugs, valve-removal plugs, threaded connectors, weld neck connectors, adapter and also spacer connectors
  • Fittings and connectors – tubing-head adapters, top connectors, spacer and adapter spools and also fluid-sampling devices
  • Chokes and valves – chokes, actuated valves, single valves, multiple valves, check valves, back-pressure valves, valves prepared for actuators, surface and underwater safety actuators and also valves
  • Other equipment – ring gaskets, clamp hubs, running and testing tools, actuators, wear bushings and also pressure boundary penetrations

ISO 10423 (API 6A)

This International Standard specifies usage environments. This, therefore, includes temperature, pressure, and material for the wellhead components, and functioning environments.

ISO 10423 (API 6A) determines demands for 5 PSLs (Product Specification Levels): PSL-1, PSL-2, PSL-3, PSL-3G, and PSL-4.

They specify various levels of industrial quality demands:

  • PSL-1 is the minimum demand of API 6A for specification, qualification, design, process, temperature, hydrostatic test, and also inspection. Traceability is demanded until all the examinations are passed
  • PSL-2 equipment complies with all demands of API 6A PSL-1, and additionally, compulsory traceability is demanded during the whole process and following the completion
  • PSL-3 equipment complies with all the demands of API 6A SSL-2 with the hydrostatic test time prolonged
  • PSL-3G comprises of all the demands of PSL-3 with extra practices defined in API 6A and also demands supplemental gas testing requirement for fabricated equipment
